Fans eager to see The Summer I Turned Pretty movie have to wait longer than expected for its release date. Recently, series creator Jenny Han confirmed that filming has not yet started and a release timeline has not been established.
The Summer I Turned Pretty movie won’t get a 2026 release date
The highly anticipated movie adaptation of The Summer I Turned Pretty will not release in 2026. The news was confirmed by author and series creator Jenny Han in a recent interview.
Speaking with Variety, Han addressed questions about the project’s timeline after being asked, “You’ve written an early draft, but it’s still very early. Is it safe to say that it’ll be out next year?” She responded, “No, I don’t think so. I don’t know when it will be out, but I don’t think it’s safe to say next year because we haven’t filmed it yet.”
Han explained that the extra time will allow the actors to better portray the characters as they grow. She said, “I honestly, really want that extra time, because it’s just getting the actors a little bit closer to adulthood.”
Han continued, “We’re getting to see Belly at 15, turning 16, and then seeing her as this young woman. And now Lola is 22! I think that I always wanted some distance for the movie, so I’m really glad to get that breathing space.” When asked about the story’s time jump, Han clarified that no decisions have been made yet.
The film was confirmed by Amazon Prime Video hours after the show’s finale premiered on the platform. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the studio said the film will conclude Belly’s journey.
Han will return to write and direct the movie. In a conversation with TODAY, she noted, “I can say there’s another big milestone for Belly, so we’ll continue with that journey.”
