Martin Scorsese’s Next Movie Casts Leonardo DiCaprio & Jennifer Lawrence

Martin Scorsese‘s next film, after 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, will reunite him with frequent collaborator and fellow Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio. The project will also feature another Oscar-winner, Jennifer Lawrence, in the cast. Apple Original Films, which previously developed Killers of the Flower Moon, is in negotiations to finance and produce the projects alongside StudioCanal.

Martin Scorsese to direct Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence-led What Happens at Night adaptation

Martin Scorsese will helm a feature-length adaptation of the ghost story novel What Happens at Night by Peter Cameron. DiCaprio and Lawrence have boarded the project as leads. The production is reportedly set to begin in January 2026. Patrick Marber, widely known for films such as Closer (2004) and The Critic (2023), wrote the screenplay (via Deadline).

This marks Scorsese and DiCaprio’s seventh collaboration as director and actor, respectively, after Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon.

Meanwhile, this is the first time that Scorsese will direct Lawrence. He served as producer on her new movie, Die, My Love, which premiered at Cannes this year and will debut in US theaters in November. DiCaprio and Lawrence have previously worked together on the comedy sci-fi Don’t Look Up (2021).

There was considerable buzz about what the 82-year-old iconic filmmaker’s 27th film will be. This includes another feature about Jesus after The Last Temptation of Christ, a mob film set in Hawaii and featuring Dwayne Johnson, and an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel Home. However, it seems that What Happens at Night has become a priority over all these other projects.

As for DiCaprio, his newest movie, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, is earning rave reviews and will debut in the US next week. He was reportedly circling several projects, including Damien Chazelle’s biopic about Evel Knievel, before What Happens at Night. There were also reports that he would have served as the lead on Scorsese’s adaptation of Home.

StudioCanal secured the rights to Cameron’s book in 2023, with Scorsese only attached as producer at the time. The project currently doesn’t have a release date.
