Barbie 2 Might Just Star Matthew McConaughey With Margot Robbie

The Barbie franchise’s future is generating buzz. Speculation about a Barbie 2 grew after Matthew McConaughey expressed interest in joining the cast as the “King of the Kens.” Although no follow-up is confirmed, remarks from Margot Robbie and America Ferrera fueled discussion. Their comments raised questions about where the story could go next.

Margot Robbie’s reaction to Matthew McConaughey as Ken in Barbie 2

On September 16, 2025, Margot Robbie reacted on Today when America Ferrera pitched Matthew McConaughey as “King of the Kens” in a Barbie sequel. When Craig Melvin mentioned that McConaughey had expressed interest, Robbie asked, “Did he say he’d do it or?” After being told yes, the actress responded, “Wonderful. Thank you for doing that.”

McConaughey, 55, also addressed the suggestion on the same program. After seeing mockups of the character, first pitched by America Ferrera, he remarked, “It’s already coming to life. It’d be hard to say no to that, wouldn’t it?” Ferrera had previously suggested the role title “King of the Kens” for McConaughey.

Despite the enthusiasm, Robbie clarified that no sequel is confirmed. Speaking to E! News in 2023, she explained, “We put everything into that movie. I can’t imagine what would be next.” Robbie further noted that any continuation would depend on director Greta Gerwig. “It would be up to Greta. I wouldn’t do it without Greta.”

Gerwig has also expressed caution about developing a follow-up. In a 2023 interview with The New York Times, she said, “At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did.” She added, “I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream, but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”

During a 2023 WGA panel, Gerwig explained her approach to creative secrecy. “I find whenever I’ve shared ideas too early, they become bad, then the movie’s not going to be any good. I don’t like to talk about things too early or pitch things or show treatments too early because it feels like it’s gonna somehow wreck what the movie is” (via Variety).
