Marvel’s Gambit Actor on What He Considers ‘the Biggest Mistake’ of His Career

Channing Tatum, who portrays Gambit in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and stars as Jeffrey Manchester in Derek Cianfrance’s new movie Roofman, has revealed what he regards as “the biggest mistake” of his career as an actor. Tatum has been active in the industry since the early 2000s and has received several accolades for his performances, including a People’s Choice Award.

Channing Tatum regrets declining Guillermo del Toro’s unmade Beauty and the Beast remake

Channing Tatum revealed during a recent interview with Vanity Fair that he believes turning down Guillermo del Toro’s unmade take on Beauty and the Beast was “the biggest mistake” of his career. “Guillermo del Toro wanted to do Beauty and the Beast, his version of the Beast,” Tatum recalled.

The actor continued, “And I’d just had a baby, I was on a movie that was absolutely killing me, and the script wasn’t totally there yet. I was just in a place in my head that I was like, ‘I don’t think I can do this right now.’ It was the biggest mistake, because I’m the biggest Guillermo fan ever. And I think Guillermo doing Beauty and the Beast would’ve been the sickest movie ever.”

Tatum’s comment was a response to a question about what other projects, besides Cianfrance’s Blue Valentine (2010), he passed on because he felt he wasn’t ready. Notably, both Tatum and Cianfrance recently spoke about the former being in consideration for the Dean Pereira role in Blue Valentine. Ryan Gosling ultimately portrayed the character.

During the aforementioned interview, Tatum confirmed to his Roofman co-star Kirsten Dunst that del Toro never developed the remake. The Magic Mike actor added, “He’s got a billion other things that he wants to do. He’s such a creator. I’ll probably never forgive myself on that one, but I hope we get to work together one day.”

Roofman premiered at TIFF on September 6, 2025. It debuts in US theaters on October 10, 2025.
