Good Boy is set to receive a full theatrical release after its trailer went viral online. The announcement confirmed an October debut and marked a major step for IFC’s upcoming supernatural horror movie.
IFC to give horror movie Good Boy full theatrical release
IFC Films has expanded the release plan for Ben Leonberg’s horror film Good Boy. The movie will now move from a limited engagement to a full wide release on October 3, 2025.
The decision came after the trailer went viral. It earned over 1.9 million views, as of writing, on IFC’s official YouTube channel and another 1.6 million on IGN‘s account. Combined, the total views reached over 3.5 million, as of writing. The film premiered earlier this year at SXSW and currently holds a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
According to IndieWire, Good Boy joins IFC’s recent lineup of horror films that performed strongly in theaters. These include Late Night with the Devil and In a Violent Nature, which grossed $10 million and $4.2 million, respectively. IFC has not confirmed the exact number of screens, but its recent horror titles reached over 1,000 theaters during their runs.
Scott Shooman, head of IFC Entertainment Group, stated, “Last year was our second-best theatrical year ever and we want to continue that. We see an opportunity as the studios are moving to three- and four-quadrant business for the indies to try and find interesting, noisy product and try to make it as big as possible.”
Good Boy is a 72-minute supernatural horror told entirely from the perspective of a dog named Indy. Indy is Leonberg’s real Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. The story follows the pup as he moves with his owner, Todd, into a rural family home. There, Indy discovers supernatural forces that threaten his companion.
The cast features Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, Larry Fessenden, Stuart Rudin, and many others. The film will open in theaters on October 3, 2025, under both the IFC and Shudder banners.
