Dept. Q Renewed for Season 2, Co-Creator Issues Statement

Netflix has revealed the renewal status of the British crime thriller series Dept. Q. Based on Jussi Adler-Olsen’s Nordic noir book series Department Q (Afdeling Q in Danish), the show premiered on Netflix on May 29, 2025, and became a big hit for the streaming site. Speculation about the show’s future has been circulating since then.

Netflix greenlights Dept. Q Season 2

Dept. Q has been renewed for Season 2 at Netflix. The announcement came almost three months after the release of the first season.

It’s safe to assume that the massive success of the inaugural season played a key role in the platform’s decision to renew the series. Following its premiere, the show remained on Netflix’s list of top 10 English-language series globally for six weeks, drawing an impressive 222 million hours of viewing.

Adler-Olsen’s books have been adapted multiple times for the screen over the years. In Netflix’s iteration, the setting is Edinburgh, Scotland. Matthew Goode portrays DCI Carl Morck, the leader of the eponymous cold case unit. The series follows Morck and his team as they investigate unsolved crimes. Dept. Q Season 1 presently has an approval rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Scott Frank thanks Netflix for Dept. Q renewal

Scott Frank, who co-created Dept Q. with Chandni Lakhani, thanked Netflix for greenlighting the sophomore season of the show. “I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly,” he said (via The Hollywood Reporter). Notably, Frank previously created Godless and co-created The Queen’s Gambit for Netflix.

Left Bank Pictures’ Rob Bullock, who served as an executive producer on the show, said, “We are going downstairs to Dept. Q for a second season.” Bullock added that people at Left Bank Pictures “nervously await what Scott has in store for his alter-ego Carl Morck, and the other enabling members of team do-lally. We salute Netflix’s courage to let them loose once again.”

Dept. Q Season 2 currently doesn’t have an official release date.
