Martin Short is ‘amazed’ Only Murders in the Building has gone for five seasons
Martin Short recently made an appearance on Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast and discussed Only Murders in the Building and its future. When asked how long the series will continue, the veteran comedian and actor responded, “I think that the reality is, you know when it feels like it’s past its time. I think everyone’s amazed that it’s gone this long. This is a long time in streaming to go five years.”
The two-time Emmy winner continued, “The Dick Van Dyke Show ended after five years, because one of the reasons was that they were afraid of losing the quality of it. But then, Friends went how long, and they were always brilliant.”
The interview happened after Short was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building. This is Short’s fourth nomination in the same category for the show.
Steve Martin, who plays Charles-Haden Savage in the show, created Only Murders in the Building with John Hoffman. The primary cast also includes Selena Gomez, who portrays Mabel Mora. The trio grows close after discovering a shared love for true-crime podcasts and begins solving successive murders at their Upper West Side, Manhattan, apartment building.
In the aforementioned interview, Short hailed Only Murders in the Building as a “great” show. He added, “It’s well written, it’s well directed, it’s well crafted, and it’s a hit.”
Only Murders in the Building Season 5 debuts on Hulu on September 9, 2025, and will comprise 10 episodes.
