A new wave of animated Spider-Man projects may be on the horizon for Sony’s Marvel universe. Recent reports indicate that Sony Pictures Animation is developing multiple spinoffs, including a film centered on Spider-Punk, signaling a broader expansion beyond the Spider-Verse trilogy.
Venom and Spider-Woman animated movies might also be in development
This follows the official announcement of a Spider-Punk animated feature with Daniel Kaluuya and Ajon Singh set as co-writers. According to Daniel Richtman on X (formerly Twitter), “There’s also an animated Spider-Women and Venom films in development.”
A separate scoop from @MyTimeToShineHello stated, “Sony is currently developing an animated Venom film.” Earlier in March 2024, @CanWeGetToast also reported that Seth Rogen had boarded the project as writer and producer.
The scoop was shared via Toonado.com. Rogen’s prior credits in adult comic adaptations include Preacher, The Boys, Invincible, and The Boys Presents: Diabolical. The animated Venom film is reportedly R-rated, diverging from the PG-13 tone of the live-action trilogy.
Rogen addressed his hesitation toward Marvel and DC collaborations in a 2023 interview with Polygon, saying, “Honestly, probably fear… It’s mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place…we’re control freaks!” He further noted, “We’re the producers of this. So we dictated the system.”
The project would follow Venom: The Last Dance (2024), which marked the final film in the Tom Hardy-led live-action trilogy. That film concluded Hardy’s tenure as Eddie Brock. Venom debuted in The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), with Eddie Brock as the original host, followed by others like Mac Gargan, Flash Thompson, and Dylan Brock.
Sony has not announced a production timeline or release date for the animated Venom movie. Reports suggest Spider-Woman has remained in development for some time, though the studio has not confirmed it.
Sony has scheduled Beyond the Spider-Verse to release on June 25, 2027.
