Greenland 2: Migration has secured its release date as it prepares to enter the 2026 box office lineup. Following the success of the original film during the pandemic, the sequel now aims to continue the franchise’s momentum. With its launch set, the survival thriller is positioned for a high-stakes debut.
Greenland 2: Migration with Gerard Butler hits theaters in January 2026
Lionsgate has scheduled Greenland 2: Migration for theatrical release on January 9, 2026. The Gerard Butler-led sequel was previously undated. The film will take the slot initially reserved for Lionsgate’s Mutiny, which is now shifting to an unspecified summer 2026 release.
Greenland 2: Migration continues the story of the Garrity family: John (Gerard Butler), Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their son, after they survive a catastrophic comet strike. Emerging from their bunker in Greenland, they must journey across a devastated Earth in search of a new safe haven.
The cast also includes Amber Rose Revah, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie. Ric Roman Waugh returns to direct the sequel, with the screenplay written by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling. Producers include Basil Iwanyk, Gerard Butler, Alan Siegel, Sébastien Raybaud, John Zois, and Brendon Boyea.
The movie is produced by STX Entertainment, G-Base Entertainment, Thunder Road Pictures, and Anton. The original Greenland, released in 2020, was a box office success internationally, opening at number one in several countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Russia, and earning over $52 million. In the United States, the film bypassed theaters during the COVID-19 pandemic and reportedly secured a lucrative $20–30 million PVOD and HBO streaming deal.
Greenland 2: Migration marks another collaboration between Butler and Waugh, following the success of their previous projects. The sequel builds on the momentum of the first film, which became a strong performer despite pandemic-related challenges during its initial release.
