A new Avatar: Fire and Ash theory explores how the Ash People could reject Eywa and embrace a rival power. With Varang’s fire-wielding abilities on display and hints of a new Pandoran deity emerging, the stage may be set for a spiritual conflict that reshapes the balance of power on Pandora.
Ash people could follow a Fire god in Avatar 3
The trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash introduces the Mangkwan clan, also known as the Ash People. The Ash People no longer follow Eywa, the central deity in the Avatar universe. A popular theory attributes this break to the clan’s shift in religious allegiance (via ScreenRant). In the trailer, Varang, the Ash People’s leader, controls fire. This suggests that a different supernatural force may empower her, separate from Eywa’s nature-based powers.
Oona Chaplin, who plays Varang, told Empire that the Ash People endured a devastating natural disaster that catalyzed their break from Eywa. She said, “They have a bunch of unresolved trauma. They got hit by a natural disaster and what Varang did was say, ‘Well, f—- Eywa.’ She basically goes towards a different power, and tries to harness that, and in so doing kind of raises her people out of misery.”
Chaplin described Varang as the “hero of her people,” suggesting she used this new power source to help them recover from starvation and despair. This shift hints at the existence of another divine or supernatural force on Pandora, potentially a destructive counterpart to Eywa.
The theory posits that this alternative entity grants Varang her fire-related abilities and could be worshipped by the Mangkwan. While the exact nature of this power remains unconfirmed, its existence would suggest Pandora is home to multiple higher powers.
Additionally, the trailer shows Varang using a flamethrower. This has sparked speculation that the Ash People may receive technological support from humans. The alliance could reflect a shared interest in the Ash People’s new power, especially if it provides a tactical edge against Eywa.
Whether this power is divine or technological, Avatar: Fire and Ash will examine its impact on Pandora’s spiritual balance. The film will also explore how it deepens the divide between the Na’vi clans.
