Tim Herlihy, the screenwriter who penned the scripts for both Happy Gilmore and Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler, gave an update on the prospects of part 3 and Sandler’s return in a future project. Happy Gilmore premiered in US theaters in 1996 and was a considerable success, leading to speculations about a sequel, which ultimately came out on Netflix this year. Its success, in turn, has ignited interest in a potential Happy Gilmore 3.
Tim Herlihy keeps hopes alive for Happy Gimore 3
Tim Herlihy didn’t rule out the possibility of Happy Gilmore 3 during a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter. When asked if there had been any talks about bringing back Happy in other projects or a third movie, the writer responded, “Not between me and Adam. I can say we haven’t had one discussion about it. I haven’t even thought about it in the privacy of my own brain. I’m sure some people in the world are talking about it. Never say never, I guess. We said we’d never do Happy Gilmore 2, and it’s currently streaming on Netflix, so you never know.”
Happy Gilmore 2 premiered on Netflix July 25, 2025, and topped the platform’s list of English movies. It also registered the highest debut for a Sandler project on the streamer with 46.7 million views in its first three days. Additionally, it currently has a 62% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 84 reviews, which nearly matches the original movie’s 63% score on the site.
Netflix has a long history of greenlighting sequels to its successful projects, and its partnership with Sandler has been quite productive for the streaming giant. The platform has developed and streamed several of Sandler’s projects in the last few years, including Murder Mystery 2, the sequel to 2019’s Murder Mystery, another Netflix venture. Accordingly, Happy Gilmore 3 remains very much a possibility.
Happy Gilmore 2 is currently available to stream on Netflix.
