Happy Gilmore 2 Creates Massive US Opening Record for Netflix

Happy Gilmore 2 has officially become Netflix’s biggest U.S. film debut to date. Nearly three decades after the original, Adam Sandler’s return to the golf course drew massive viewership during its opening weekend. The strong response marks a new milestone for Sandler’s ongoing partnership with the platform and signals renewed interest in the long-running comedy franchise.

Happy Gilmore 2 starts with over 46 million views in the US

Happy Gilmore 2 has garnered 46.7 million views in its first three days, making it the biggest U.S. opening weekend ever for a Netflix film and the best opening for any Sandler project on the platform. Views are calculated by dividing total watch hours by the film’s runtime.

The film ranked No. 1 on Netflix’s global Top 10 English-language movies list for the week of July 21 to 27. The original Happy Gilmore (1996), which is also streaming on Netflix, rose to No. 3 with 11.4 million views, marking its second consecutive week on the chart. The first movie earned over $40 million at the box office and helped establish Sandler as a mainstream comedy lead.

In Happy Gilmore 2, Sandler reprises his role as the volatile golf player who has retired and turned to alcohol following a traumatic incident. He returns to the sport to raise money for his daughter’s ballet school in Paris. Christopher McDonald returns as Shooter McGavin.

The cast also includes Benny Safdie, Bad Bunny, Travis Kelce, and Sandler’s wife Jackie and daughters Sunny and Sadie. Cameos feature Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Sean Evans, and Guy Fieri.

Netflix’s weekly rankings also show continued success for KPop Demon Hunters, which held the No. 2 spot with 26.3 million views in its sixth week. Untamed remained the No. 1 English-language TV series with 26.1 million views.

The third season of Squid Game led the non-English TV list with 4.6 million views. Other notable rankings included Trainwreck: P.I. Moms at No. 5 on the English film list (4.8 million views) and Madea’s Destination Wedding at No. 6 (4.6 million views). Wall to Wall led the non-English film chart with 7.8 million views.
