Julia Garner recently shared an update regarding whether the Madonna biopic has been canceled. The film based on the renowned pop icon was announced by Universal Pictures in 2020, but the production of the biopic was later canceled in 2023. However, work on the biopic was later resumed in 2024.
Julia Garner confirms Madonna biopic movie is not canceled
The 31-year-old actress, who recently played the Silver Surfer in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, opened up about the Madonna biopic and revealed whether it is canceled.
Julia Garner joined the SmartLess podcast hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes on their latest episode, where she shared details about the biopic. She stated, “That’s supposed to still happen.” Garner further expressed her admiration toward the 66-year-old singer and disclosed how she got cast as the music icon.
The Weapons star continued, “I was such a fan of Madonna’s. Um, you know, I grew up listening to Madonna. It just came about. I knew they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer, and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”
Garner further added, “OK, what would Madonna do? Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.'”
Julia Garner joined the Madonna biopic in 2022; however, the movie was later shelved. Work on this much-awaited biopic, which is supposedly titled Who’s That Girl, restarted in 2024.
