The Gilded Age Season 3’s Ben Ahlers on if Jack Is Leaving

Ben Ahlers, who portrays John “Jack” Trotter on the HBO historical drama series The Gilded Age, reflected on whether his character is leaving after the events of Season 3 Episode 6. Ahlers’ Jack, a footman at the Forte/Van Rhijn household, was a recurring character in the inaugural season of the show. From Season 2, Ahlers became a series regular.

Is Ben Ahlers’ Jack leaving The Gilded Age permanently after Season 3?

Ben Ahlers heavily indicated in multiple interviews that Jack will still be part of the overarching storyline on The Gilded Age despite what happened in the sixth episode of the third season. Toward the end of the said episode, Christine Baranski’s Agnes van Rhijn discovers that Jack has become considerably wealthy from the sale of his clock design alongside Harry Richardson’s Larry Russell.

She and Cynthia Nixon’s Ada Forte subsequently ask Jack to move out of their home and start the next chapter of his life. This leads Jack to say goodbye to members of the household, but not before giving them parting letters and generous amounts of cash.

The 28-year-old actor teased what is in store for his character in the rest of Season 3 during an interview with Town & Country, confirming that Jack is not going anywhere. “Jack’s going to be left with some real decisions about how he wants to operate with this newfound freedom, and I would say,” he said. “Based off of what I think what we all know about him is that he likes to keep himself busy, and he got into this, again, not for the money, but for the engagement of solving a problem.”

Ahlers added that he thought Jack had “gotten an itch for the patent game” and that he was “eager to see what he cooks up next.” In a separate interview with TV Insider, Ahlers indicated that Jack’s relationship with Larry and Louisa Jacobson’s Marian Brook will continue to change as the series progresses.

The Gilded Age Season 3 airs on HBO every Sunday.
