Ballard Season 2 release date may be closer than expected, as Maggie Q shared an exciting update about the show’s future. In a new interview, she confirmed that writers are already working on the next arc and hinted at a possible fall production start, setting the stage for a release sometime in the near future.
Ballard Season 2 could begin filming soon and release next year
Maggie Q confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that a second season of Ballard is actively in development, with writers already working on the next arc. “We have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting,” she said. Q added, “If we get a season two of Ballard, I think we’ll be back in the fall to shoot.” A fall 2025 production start would likely set up Season 2 for a 2026 release.
The show premiered on Prime Video on July 9, 2025, and quickly climbed to No. 1 on the platform’s TV charts. Q noted the fan interest was strong from the beginning. “When they made the announcement that I was doing the show, I got more texts, more messages, more people reaching out than for anything I’ve ever done in my entire career.”
Q plays Renée Ballard, head of LAPD’s cold cases unit, in the Bosch universe spinoff series. The show’s first season ends on a cliffhanger, but Q acknowledged that there’s no guarantee of renewal despite positive reception. “This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds,” she explained. She also recalled past experiences where a writers room was assembled, but the show was still canceled.
Production company Fabel Entertainment developed Ballard, and Henrik Bastin reportedly pursued Q for over a year before securing her commitment. Season 1’s production was one of the rare cases that allowed Q to work in Los Angeles, breaking a long-standing pattern of filming in Canada despite intentions to shoot in California.
