According to a recent scoop, Scarlett Johansson could have reunited with her Black Widow co-star Florence Pugh in the live-action Tangled movie. Disney announced the live-action adaptation of the blockbuster animated film in December 2024. Additionally, Michael Gracey was in talks to step in as director. However, Disney has not confirmed whether Johansson and Pugh were being eyed for Mother Gothel and Rapunzel, respectively.
Live-action Tangled might have cast Scarlett Johansson as Mother Gothel
Recently, renowned Hollywood scooper My Time To Shine Hello shared that Scarlett Johansson was being considered to play the role of Mother Gothel in the live-action Tangled film, before it was put on hold.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the scooper noted, “Before the project was put on hold, Scarlett Johansson was in talks to play Mother Gothel in the live-action Tangled movie.” This would’ve reunited Johansson with Florence Pugh, whom she starred alongside in the movie Black Widow. The actresses portrayed the roles of sisters Natasha Romanoff and Yelena Belova in the Marvel movie.
The Thunderbolts* actress was previously rumored to be the top candidate to take on the role of Rapunzel. This scoop was shared by another industry insider, Daniel Richtman, in January 2025. However, Disney has not made any official statements regarding these casting rumors.
Development on the live-action Tangled movie, which was announced at the end of last year, has been paused indefinitely at the studio. The move was made by Disney after the underwhelming response to the live-action Snow White movie. Featuring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot, the film made around $205 million at the box office, which is significantly lower than its reported budget of $270 million.
However, another recent rumor stated that Disney might move forward with the live-action Tangled film, but only if the live-action Moana movie turns out to be a success.
