Doctor Who Season 3 Rumored to Be Dead at Disney+, but There’s Hope

A new rumor hints at uncertainty surrounding Doctor Who Season 3 on Disney+, with reports suggesting changes to its current streaming arrangement. While details remain limited, the series may be exploring other options for continuation. This development raises questions about what’s next for the long-running sci-fi franchise.

Doctor Who Season 3 may be canceled at Disney+

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, “Doctor Who is only dead at Disney, but there are active talks to revive it elsewhere, and things are looking promising” (via SFF Gazette). The BBC is reportedly exploring new streaming partnerships, though no deals have been finalized.

The current situation follows underwhelming performance during the show’s Disney+ relaunch. Despite the return of showrunner Russell T Davies and a larger production budget, the first two seasons struggled with ratings and fan reception. Concepts such as “Bi-regeneration” and changes to the Doctor’s lore, alongside Davies’ new creative direction, led to backlash from long-time viewers.

Ncuti Gatwa appeared briefly in Season 1 due to other acting commitments. His limited screen time made it difficult for him to establish himself as the Doctor. Billie Piper returned unexpectedly and took over the role in the Season 2 finale. Her return sparked further division among fans. The production team canceled the planned 2025 Christmas special. No new season is currently in development.

The Doctor Who deal with Disney+ aimed to relaunch the series globally. It promised a bigger budget and expanded storytelling. However, low viewership and mixed reactions led Disney to pull out. The BBC is now in talks with other platforms, including Prime Video and Netflix. No new distribution deal has been finalized yet.

Separately, a leaked alternate ending for Season 2 surfaced online. A TikTok post referencing Richtman’s report shared a screenshot confirming its authenticity. The mother of the actress who played Poppy reportedly validated the leak.

Season 2 followed the Doctor and Belinda Chandra as they tried to return to Earth. A mysterious force blocked their path, leading to dangerous encounters. The finale ended on an unresolved cliffhanger.
