Stick’s Reviews & Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Way Less Than Ted Lasso

Stick is the new sports comedy series on Apple TV+, and here’s how it fares in reviews and Rotten Tomatoes scores compared to Ted Lasso, one of the most successful shows on the platform. Created by Jason Keller, Stick revolves around Owen Wilson’s Pryce Cahill, a washed-up former golfer who finds a sense of purpose after meeting Peter Dager’s Santi, a gifted young golfer.

First reviews for Owen Wilson’s Stick on Apple TV+

The inaugural season of Stick has received mixed to positive responses from the critics.

Sarah Moran of ScreenRant wrote that while Stick wasn’t “Ted Lasso for golf,” it was “an enjoyable, almost effortless watch.” On Wilson’s performance, Moran noted that it was “a large part of Stick’s charm.” The reviewer added, “The role feels as if it was written for him, perfectly tailored to his brand of affable loser. But it’s also an evolution, allowing Wilson some meaty dramatic material to work with alongside the snark.”

Meanwhile, according to TV Insider’s Matt Roush, even though Stick has quite a few “predictable twists and inevitable road bumps,” fans will ultimately root for the main characters.

Rolling Stone‘s Alan Sepinwall admitted that Stick could be viewed as “derivative” of Ted Lasso and various sports movies, but added that “it’s also not without its charms, starting with its leading man.”

However, Nick Schager of The Daily Beast wasn’t as generous in the publication’s review of the show and criticized how it stretched its plot clichés so thin that “its comedy by and large vanishes, thereby neutering charming turns from Owen Wilson and Mark Maron.”

How Ted Lasso’s Rotten Tomatoes scores compare to Stick

Stick Season 1 has received a 69% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 13 reviews. In comparison, Ted Lasso Season 1 has a 92% approval rating, Season 2 has a 98% approval rating, and Season 3 has an 81% approval rating. The above-mentioned number for Stick will likely change as more reviews come in.
