The Handmaid’s Tale Creators on Why June & [Spoiler] Didn’t Reunite in Series Finale

With the hopeful yet open ending of The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 leaving fans with more questions than answers, the season’s showrunners, Yahlin Chang and Eric Tuchman, have come out to address why they could not write the reunion of Elisabeth Moss’ June and a key character into the series finale.

As per Chang and Tuchman’s comments, the much-awaited meet-up between June and her daughter, Jordana Blake’s Hannah, did not happen due to the forthcoming Handmaid’s Tale spin-off, The Testaments.

June and Hannah didn’t reunite in The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6 due to upcoming spin-off

In a recent discussion, Yahlin Chang, who took over as co-showrunner for Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, after series creator Bruce Miller shifted focus on adapting The Testaments to the small screen, noted that the franchise’s sequel series was the reason why fans couldn’t witness June and Hannah’s reunion in the finale.

While speaking with the Los Angeles Times, Chang stated, “Our hands were tied, unfortunately, and we could not bring June and Hannah together because of ‘The Testaments,’ which was something that we really struggled with. I struggled with, speaking for myself, not giving people what they wanted or what I wanted.”

Her creative partner on The Handmaid’s Tale Season 6, Eric Tuchman, reiterated Chang’s sentiments about the missing reunion of June and Hannah, noting, “Knowing we couldn’t reunite June and Hannah, it was heartbreaking.” He also added, “Once we found out that we couldn’t do that, that there was that boundary that we had to respect, when I think about it now, it shifted what her emotional engine became: What does it mean to keep going when you don’t get what you want and what you are hoping for, and what if that might never happen? It actually feels like a really powerful message now — that you keep going, you never stop loving.”

Notably, a sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale, which draws inspiration from Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel, The Testaments, is currently in the works. The book written by Atwood in the wake of the Elisabeth Moss-led show’s success takes place 15 years after the events of her original novel and follows the journey of Agnes (Hannah), Daisy, as well as the fan-favorite Aunt Lydia.
