Dexter: Resurrection to Bring Back John Lithgow & Jimmy Smits in Familiar Roles

John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits have been confirmed to reprise their respective roles from the original Dexter series in Dexter: Resurrection, Deadline reported. Smits’ Miguel Prado appeared in Season 3 of Dexter and was one of the two primary antagonists of the season along with Jesse Borrego’s George King. Meanwhile, Lithgow’s Arthur Mitchell, or the Trinity Killer, appeared in Dexter’s fourth season, serving as its main antagonist.

Notably, both characters are supposed to be dead in the main timeline of Dexter. It’s unclear how Prado will be utilized in Resurrection, though it’s possible that he will be part of an exploration of the sordid past of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan.

As for Arthur, Lithgow hinted that he would make a cameo appearance in Resurrection. “I just went back to do a day,” the 79-year-old actor told Variety earlier this month. “They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of Dexter. And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed,” he added.

Further, a prequel spin-off series revolving around a younger version of the Trinity Killer is reportedly in development. Mitchell’s appearance in Resurrection could potentially set that up.

Beyond the original series, Mitchell made brief appearances in flashback scenes of the limited series Dexter: New Blood. Additionally, a younger version of Prado, portrayed by Nick Santucci, appeared in Dexter’s second spin-off, Dexter: Original Sin.

Dexter aired on Showtime for eight seasons from October 1, 2006, to September 22, 2013. The 10 episodes of New Blood were broadcast between November 7, 2021, and January 9, 2022. Original Sin premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime in December 2024, featuring 10 episodes. Dexter: Resurrection comes out on Paramount+ with Showtime in the summer of 2025.
