Milly Alcock reveals how she prepares herself for public backlash as actor stars in ‘Supergirl’

In her interview with Vanity Fair, Milly Alcock opened up about preparing for backlash after she was cast in “Supergirl”. She stated, “I am aware that I am going to get comments. But I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.” Alcock further added, “I kept getting these crazy dreams—this image of me at the foot of a tsunami. Of course I’m scared.” The “House of the Dragon” star continued, “Of course I want people to like me and the movie.”

However, she felt that, in the end, it was out of her control. The 25 year old shared that she was cold-calling talent agencies at age 13. “We struggled financially, so it really pushed me to be assertive,” Alcock said.

As such, her mother became her source of motivation. She said, “My mother instilled this blind confidence within me: ‘If those idiots can do it, why can’t you?’ Her words, not mine.” The actor quipped, “It just lit a fire under my arse.”

Alcock also addressed directors like Martin Scorsese, criticizing the superhero genre. “Whenever a new wave comes along, there’s going to be criticism towards it,” she said. She continued, “Not every film is for everyone. The beauty of art is that you can be selective about your taste.”

Additionally, she spoke up on the preparation for the inevitable backlash of her upcoming superhero role. “It definitely made me aware that simply existing as a woman in that space is something that people comment on,” she said. Alcock further explained, “We have become very comfortable having this weird ownership of women’s bodies. I can’t really stop them. I can only be myself.”
