Channing Tatum Shares What Custody of His Daughter Does to Him: ‘It’s Tough’

Channing Tatum recently recalled the “painful” time when he and his ex-wife, Jenna Dewan, parted ways. Although they broke up in 2018, their divorce was finalized last year. Reportedly, the “Magic Mike” alum seemed not to have forgotten the heartbreak. In a new interview, he revealed that it was “tough” for him to spend time without his daughter because of the shared custody.

Channing Tatum opens up on life after divorce and raising kids with ex-wife Jenna Dewan

Channing Tatum’s divorce from Jenna Dewan was finalized in 2024, and they agreed on joint custody for their daughter, Everly. In a recent interview with Variety, the 45-year-old actor gave a rare insight into his life after divorce and raising a kid with his ex. “I wish I could just have her all the time,” he said about his kid.

Due to the shared custody, the Hollywood star cannot be with Everly every day. Hence, during the interview, he expressed his emotions while speaking about his new film, “Roofman.” In it, he plays a character who misses his daughter. Referring to this, he stated, “I know for a fact I’m able to understand [the character].”

Recalling the break-up with Dewan, Tatum revealed that it was a “painful” experience because they were “young” at the time. “We tried to keep it together, tried for a year and a half, but we knew it was [not working],” he added. However, the two share a cordial relationship now. They are focused on their child’s well-being, but the producer mentioned that it was “tough not to have your daughter half the time.”

Furthermore, Tatum opened up about his “Avengers” experience. Last year, he made his Marvel debut in Ryan Reynolds’ “Deadpool & Wolverine” as Gambit. He revealed that he was unsure about signing the role because of Everly. As he claimed that the filming would not be in the U.S., it would be difficult for him as a father.

Later, after discussing with his daughter, he agreed to the offer. He mentioned, “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do ‘Avengers,’ because I was going to have to be gone, but I was like — it’s OK. She’s going into middle school now.” Tatum will return as Gambit in the 2026 release, “Avengers: Doomsday.”
