Meghan Markle and King Charles have reportedly become jam rivals. A source claimed that the 76-year-old monarch has slashed his product’s prices in half to compete with his estranged daughter-in-law. The king has been selling his Sandringham raspberry jam at the U.K. grocery stores for several years. He does the business through his Duchy of Cornwall estate. On the other hand, Markle’s As Ever preserves are comparatively new in the market but are quite popular among buyers.
King Charles slashes jam price, sells at a lower cost than Meghan Markle’s, says source
King Charles’ jams have reportedly been sold in lesser price than Meghan Markle’s. A source told Rob Shuter’s #Shuterscoop that Sandringham raspberry product has now been priced at $6.70, while As Ever preserves’ cost is $14. According to the palace insider, the monarch’s team taste-tested Markle’s product before cutting down the cost.
“They wanted theirs cheaper and better,” they added. Perfect to go with a “warm buttered toast,” Charles’ jam is expected to hit the “mass market.” As the Duchess of Sussex has built As Ever on “exclusivity,” the source claimed that the king has been allegedly “aiming straight at her price point.” His preserves have already been on the market for a long period and might have loyal customers.
Meanwhile, the former TV actor launched her brand earlier this year. However, it gained immense attention for various reasons. While the products were sold out instantly, she also received slightly disappointing reactions from her friends. During an episode of the Netflix show, “With Love, Meghan,” she shed light on the situation.
According to the New York Post, the duchess had made gift hampers for 50 of her close friends, which contained fresh fruit jams, especially made by her in her kitchen. So, when her pal Mindy Kaling received it, she initially felt special. After learning that Markle sent the gift baskets to 50 people, she took it otherwise. However, the “Suits” alum had no intention to make her friends unhappy. “It was not a ranking. It was just, ‘Let me share them.’ And then people started to take it very personally,” the 44-year-old duchess said.
