Questions about Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara are resurfacing, and Meghan Markle is reportedly frustrated that her kids are not in line for the heirloom. Experts pointed to Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, as the most likely heir to the historic piece. As such, Markle’s daughter, Lilibet, might not get to inherit the family diamond.
Expert says Meghan Markle’s daughter might not inherit Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara
According to a report from RadarOnline, Princess Charlotte is most likely to inherit Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara. The tiara, valued at an estimated $535,000, will be passed down depending on “several key factors.” Consequently, Meghan Markle is reportedly “raging” that her daughter Lilibet is unlikely to receive the heirloom.
Although both Charlotte and Lilibet are Diana’s granddaughters, their distance from royal tradition plays a role. The late princess wore the Spencer Tiara at her wedding to King Charles in 1981. It has never belonged to the Crown and remains a private possession of the Spencer family. The heirloom is currently under the care of Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer.
Jewelry specialist Maxwell Stone told RadarOnline, “[Charlotte] embodies her grandmother’s legacy in a very public way, making the Spencer Tiara a fitting and symbolic choice for future events — particularly a wedding.” Charlotte is just 8 years old. Yet, she is a central part of the royal family’s public image, carrying her grandmother’s legacy. Meanwhile, Lilibet, who lives in the United States, does not carry the same legacy.
Stone explained, “Raised outside traditional royal circles, her path is less entwined with royal custom.” Hence, it “may make access to the tiara less straightforward.” He added, “There is virtually no way it will end up in Lilibet’s hands, and Meghan is seeing this as yet another snub to her and her kids.” Stone describes the tiara as “intricately crafted and rich in sentimental value.” Hence, it makes for “one of the most treasured heirlooms in British aristocracy.”
Princess Diana’s Spencer Tiara has not been seen much in public since her death in 1997. The last public appearance came in 2018, when Diana’s niece Celia McCorquodale wore it at her wedding. Even so, for Meghan Markle’s daughter, the question of inheriting the heirloom highlights the distance that now exists between the Sussex family and royal tradition.
