It’s not like Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds to miss out on a flashy and fashionable moment, but the couple skipping the Met Gala 2025 raised flags that it was because of the Justin Baldoni lawsuit drama. This year’s theme for the grant event on May 5 was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” Unfortunately, style experts, critics, and fashion devotees couldn’t witness the couple’s take on the dress code.
Lively has been an indispensable part of the event since debuting in 2008 and even co-chaired alongside Reynolds in 2022. For the occasion, she wore the iconic Atelier Versace gown that transformed into an aged copper outfit, paying homage to the Statue of Liberty in one of the most discussed red carpet looks.
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds skipped Met Gala 2025 amid Justin Baldoni legal drama
Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds sitting out the Met Gala 2025 was no surprise, as it has been the case for most events this year. The two have been on a hiatus from the spotlight since December when Lively filed a lawsuit against her “It Ends With Us” co-star Justin Baldoni, accusing him of orchestrating a smear campaign against her. She also accused Baldoni of sexual harassment, but he retaliated with a countersuit, sparking a highly publicized legal battle. The plaintiffs are due in court in March 2026, as they continue to reveal more evidence.
Then again, the chances of the “Gossip Girl” alum and Reynolds attending the annual event this year were bleak. In March, PEOPLE confirmed through an exclusive source that they will be skipping what is widely known as “fashion’s biggest night out” on the first Monday of May. “Blake and Ryan haven’t gone since 2022, when they were co-chairs, and they will not be in attendance this year,” the source had claimed. However, their absence didn’t go unnoticed as they first debuted as a couple at the event in 2014 and consider it a special part of their romantic history.
The Met Gala 2025 could have marked Blake Lively’s 11th appearance, three years after she last co-chaired with Ryan Reynolds. In 2023, she announced that she wouldn’t be attending during her appearance at a separate red carpet event. Back then, Lively responded to reporters asking whether fans would see her at the high-fashion event. As per a PEOPLE report, she told the publication, “You will not. But I will be watching.”
