Donald Trump’s Senior Official Joe Kent Resigns Over Iran War

National Counterterrorism Center Director Joe Kent resigned on March 17 over what he described as an unjustified war against Iran, triggering an immediate backlash from President Donald Trump and his allies.

Joe Kent resigns as Director of National Counterterrorism

Joe Kent resigns from his post effective immediately, citing moral objections to the administration’s military campaign. In a resignation letter addressed to President Donald Trump and posted on his X account, Kent wrote: “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war.”

The Army veteran and former CIA paramilitary officer directly challenged the president’s rationale for military action. “Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby,” Kent stated in his letter. His resignation comes just months after the Senate narrowly confirmed him for the director role last July, despite his history of promoting far-right conspiracy theories.

Donald Trump swiftly disputed Kent’s claims during an Oval Office meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin. “I always thought he was a nice guy, but I always thought he was weak on security,” Trump told reporters. After reviewing Kent’s resignation statement, the president added, “I realized that it’s a good thing that he’s out.” Adding, “Every country realized what a threat Iran was (via CNBC).”

Furthermore, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt took to X to condemn Kent’s accusations, stating the director was parroting “the same false claim that Democrats and some in the liberal media have been repeating over and over.” She emphasized that Trump “had strong and compelling evidence that Iran was going to attack the United States first” and “would never make the decision to deploy military assets against a foreign adversary in a vacuum.” Leavitt dismissed Kent’s claims about Israeli influence as “both insulting and laughable.”

Joe Kent’s resignation exposes potential fractures within the intelligence community regarding the Iranian threat.
