Dakota Johnson & Sean Penn’s R-Rated Movie To Be Removed From Netflix

A 2024 movie starring Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn is set to exit Netflix‘s content library next month. The movie explores human connection through an intimate, heartfelt conversation about life between a cab driver and his passenger.

Daddio leaves Netflix in April

Netflix will delist Daddio from its platform on Sunday, April 26, 2026. The movie features only two main characters, played by Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson.

It centers on a young woman, Girlie (Johnson), as she takes a late-night cab from New York’s JFK International Airport to Manhattan. On her way, she engages in a conversation with her cab driver, Clark (Penn). Their conversation gradually shifts from casual topics to deeply personal subjects, including relationships and past trauma.

Making her feature debut, Christy Hall is the writer and director of Daddio. She reportedly wrote the story for a stage play and later decided to adapt it into a feature (via Entertainment Weekly). Furthermore, Hall’s spec script for Daddio was included in the 2017 Black List Screenplays. For the uninitiated, Black List is an annual survey that lists the most-liked motion scripts of the year that are yet to be produced.

In 2017, Daisy Ridley was reportedly reeled in to star in the movie, per Variety. However, the role ultimately landed with Johnson. Interestingly, when Johnson joined as a co-producer, she showed interest in starring in the film, and was also the one who suggested Penn (via Collider). Additionally, Penn co-produced the movie under his production company, Projected Picture Works.

Daddio premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival on September 1, followed by a screening at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10. The movie later opened in theaters in the United States on June 28, 2024.

Upon release, the movie garnered raving reviews for nearly all aspects. On Rotten Tomatoes, it currently has a 75% Tomatometer score and a 89% Popcornmeter score. Despite the positive reception, the movie ended its theatrical run, earning $1.8 million (via Box Office Mojo).
