Donald Trump Mocks Gavin Newsom: ‘President Shouldn’t Have Learning Disabilities’

Donald Trump and Gavin Newsom exchanged public remarks that drew attention ahead of ongoing political discussions involving both figures. The US president commented on Newsom’s dyslexia while criticizing the California governor’s suitability for office.

Donald Trump said people with learning disabilities should not be president while criticizing California Governor Gavin Newsom over his dyslexia, according to the BBC. He told reporters, “Honestly, I’m all for people with learning disabilities, but not for my president. I don’t want, I think a president should not have learning disabilities, OK?” Trump also referred to Newsom as “dumb” and used the nickname “Gavin Newscum.”

Trump continued his remarks in the Oval Office, stating, “With a low IQ person, you know, because Gavin Newscum has admitted that he is a, that he has learning disabilities.” He added, “The President of the United States, Gavin Newscum, admitted that he has learning disabilities, dyslexia. Everything about him is dumb.” The comments drew criticism from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, which said it was “disturbed by and strongly condemns” the remarks.

Gavin Newsom responded after Trump appeared to refer to him as president. He wrote on X, “NO THANK YOU, WE BELIEVE IN FREE ELECTIONS!” Newsom also addressed his dyslexia in a prior event, saying, “You’ve never seen me read a speech, because I cannot read a speech.”

During the same discussion, Newsom said, “I’m like you,” while referencing poor exam results and reading difficulties. Trump posted on Truth Social that Newsom “can’t read, has dyslexia, and has a mental disorder – A Cognitive Mess!” Newsom replied, “I spoke about my dyslexia. I know that’s hard for a brain-dead moron who bombs children and protects pedophiles to understand.”

The National Center for Learning Disabilities stated that dyslexia does not impair intelligence, judgement, or leadership ability. Chief executive Jackie Rodriguez said people with learning disabilities have held senior public office, including the presidency. Dyslexia affects 15% of the US population, with some estimates as high as 20%.
