Ricky Gervais Has a Savage Reply To Oscar Hosting Chances

Despite being a five-time Golden Globes host, Ricky Gervais made it clear that audiences shouldn’t expect to see him emceeing the Academy Awards anytime soon. Hours before the 2026 ceremony on March 15, the British comedian and actor gave a response to a fan who suggested he should take on Oscars hosting duties.

The reaction came when a fan account named The Ricky Gervais Clips posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Repost if you wish @rickygervais was hosting the #Oscars tonight.” Gervais’ direct reply left little room for interpretation, as he wrote, “F— that!”

The comedian’s dismissal might not have come as a surprise to those familiar with his history as an awards show host. Gervais took over the Golden Globes’ host duties in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, and 2020. There, he earned a reputation for doing sharp roasts of Hollywood’s A-listers.

His monologues drew significant attention, partly because audiences never knew which person Gervais might skewer next. However, in a 2025 interview with Variety, Gervais pulled back the curtain on his hosting persona, revealing that the image was largely calculated.

“The marketing thing is that, ‘It’s live. He could say anything. Oh, my God. He’s brutal. Oh, he doesn’t care about anything.’ All those are untrue,” Gervais explained. “I write those jokes. I look at them from every angle. I make sure they’re bulletproof. I go out with a beer, I pretend to be a loose cannon, but I’m not. I’m never drunk. I have like a sip. And I can justify anything. I’m never that brutal. It just seems like it.”

Gervais continues to find success in the awards realm, though from the comfort of his own seat rather than the stage. His most recent comedy special, Ricky Gervais: Mortality, won best stand-up comedy performance at this year’s Golden Globes. The win is his second victory in the category, following 2024’s honor for Ricky Gervais: Armageddon.
