Ryan Gosling returned to the Studio 8H stage as a four-time host, just weeks before his sci-fi film Project Hail Mary hits theaters. He kicked off his monologue by talking about the movie and its big, ambitious storyline. However, the moment took a fun turn when Gosling spotted someone unexpected in the crowd. Sitting right in the front row was Harry Styles. The surprise instantly caught Gosling off guard.
He paused mid-monologue and called out to the singer, asking what he was doing there. Gosling then joked that he wished someone had warned him beforehand. Cameras kept cutting to Styles, who smiled from the audience while Gosling tried to get back to explaining his new film.
While talking about Project Hail Mary, Gosling joked about how people have been comparing it to classic sci-fi movies. “People are saying it’s like ‘E.T.’ meets ‘Interstellar,’ which is crazy, because those are like, what, two of the best films of all time?” he said. “Kind of like saying it’s like, what, double that?” However, the focus kept shifting back to Styles, prompting Gosling to laugh and ask, “I’m sorry, why are we on Harry Styles?”
Not long after, Gosling suddenly found himself surrounded by most of the Saturday Night Live cast. They appeared onstage dressed as flashy aliens while he belted out Sign of the Times by Styles. Gosling moved into his own viral number, I’m Just Ken from the hit film Barbie. At one point, he jokingly thanked the alien-costumed cast for showing up to back him. That set up the punchline. Kenan Thompson stepped in and cracked that they were not there for Gosling at all. He joked that the group only came to get a closer look at Styles.
