Beloved Historical Fantasy Show Gets Better RT Score Than Game of Thrones’ Final Season

After nearly twelve years of transporting viewers through the stones, the epic romance of Claire and Jamie Fraser is coming to an end. But if the first reviews are any indication, the historical fantasy is going out on top with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

What critics are saying about Outlander Season 8 in reviews

The Outlander Season 8 reviews are praising it for staying true to its strengths while tackling bigger questions. Critics who screened the first three episodes note that the final season balances supernatural elements with the character work fans love. Hunter Ingram from AV Club observed that “Season eight succeeds (so far) by not cowering from the loftier questions about Claire and Jamie’s knotted place in the family tree of their past, present, and future.”

Tara Bennett of IGN Movies described the opening episodes as ones that “balance the show’s ongoing supernatural mythology with plenty of historical storytelling and character-driven intrigue.” Carly Lane from Collider offered a measured take, quipping that “with only three episodes to refer to, it’s tough to say whether Starz’s epic fantasy romance series will stick the landing, but this final beginning is a strong example of what the show has always been good at.”

Outlander Season 8 gets a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Outlander Season 8 Rotten Tomatoes score currently stands at 100%, though audience scores remain pending. This puts the final season in rare company and stands in stark contrast to Game of Thrones season 8, which got 55% from critics and a 30% from audiences.

Outlander’s final season premiered on March 6 with “Soul of a Rebel.” The episode brought Claire and Jamie back to Fraser’s Ridge armed with new information about their daughter Faith and granddaughter Fanny. The premiere also checked in with the extended family: Fergus and Marsali, William Ransom, Young Ian and Rachel, plus Brianna and Roger.

The series finale airs May 8, closing out nearly 12 years of storytelling based on Diana Gabaldon’s novels.
