Colin Jost, co-anchor of “Weekend Update,” played a 2011 clip of Donald Trump. In it, he criticized then-President Barack Obama’s handling of the Iran situation. Trump also claimed that Obama would prefer to start a war because he lacks the ability to negotiate. The clip resurfaced on Saturday Night Live‘s news program in light of a reported U.S.-Israeli joint attack on Tehran. It has led to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and heightened tensions in the Middle East.
Colin Jost trolls Donald Trump amid Iran war
Colin Jost played an old clip of Donald Trump criticizing then-President Barack Obama’s approach to the Iran situation. His controversial remarks about Obama appeared to contradict his own approach to the political situation at the time. Before playing the clip, Jost said the attack might be a “bad idea,” while noting that he is not an expert on the Iran situation. He then pointed to the Trump clip, joking that it might reveal the reason why the attack happened.
He played the 2011 clip of Trump, where he doubts Obama’s approach to dealing with the Iran situation. Trump said at the time, “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He’s weak and he’s ineffective.” After the clip ended, Jost jokingly said, “See, now that’s the Trump I voted for.” He also joked that he worries that Trump’s current approach towards the Iran war might disqualify him from winning the Peace Prize.
Jost continued, “After launching a massive military strike against Iran, Trump announced hours ago that they officially killed the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and replaced him with, oh my God, the guy from Venezuela?”
He also then showcased Venezuela’s president’s photo in the Supreme Leader’s attire, referring to the joke.
In the 2011 clip, Donald Trump also accused Barack Obama of allegedly starting a war with Iran to increase his chances of getting re-elected as president.
