After a brief hiatus, the Kathy Bates-led Matlock Season 2 made an explosive return to the small screen with a huge plot twist in the midseason premiere. With the truth about Matty’s actual identity leaving Julian dumbfounded, actor Jason Ritter has explained the ending of the Thursday episode, highlighting the impact of the unexpected reveal.
Jason Ritter had this to say about Matlock Season 2 midseason premiere
During a recent conversation, the Gravity Falls star noted that Matty’s lawyer persona left his character Julian completely blindsided in Matlock Season 2.
“He knows that something’s been going on with the Wellbrexa file, and this has come to light for some reason, but I don’t think he knew how deep this went,” Jason Ritter told TV Insider. “And when you see all of the evidence that he’s thought has been hidden and these details, like the fire alarm, you see that this has been a meticulously researched case that they’ve been building against him. I mean, it’s never good if you see one of those conspiracy boards and all of the red yarn is pointing to your picture. Initially, with the Wellbrexa study, Olympia knowing about it, he felt maybe there’s some kind of way out. He’s realizing how deep in it he is at this moment.”
Notably, in the Matlock Season 2 midseason premiere, Matty tries to throw Julian off the track by welcoming him into her fake apartment. However, he soon realizes that Olivia (Skye P. Marshall), his ex-wife, had lied to him about Matty’s whereabouts. As such, Julian tracks down Matty’s actual residence and discovers that she is actually an attorney who had been investigating him on the Wellbrexa case for a long time. She also reveals to him that the study he hid ended up costing her daughter’s life.
Having uncovered so many truths in just a single scene, Jason Ritter confirmed that Julian has ceased trusting either Matty or Olivia. “And all of a sudden, the level of betrayal is just mind-boggling. He realizes exactly how much he underestimated Matty Matlock at his own peril,” he added.
With his father, Senior, now back from his coma, viewers will have to wait and see whether or not Julian will sacrifice himself for his old man.
