Netflix seems to have found its own real-life version of HBO’s Succession in the form of an upcoming documentary series based on Rupert Murdoch’s rise to power and the subsequent drama that ensued to find his successor. Titled Dynasty: The Murdochs, the four-part show has now received its first trailer from acclaimed streaming platform, along with its official release date.
Rupert Murdoch’s Netflix docuseries gets its first look
On February 26, Netflix unveiled the first look at the forthcoming Rupert Murdoch series with a 2-minute trailer.
As per the official trailer shared on YouTube, the highly anticipated docuseries depicts the internal struggle of the Murdoch family members as they vie for the highest stakes in the media mogul’s news empire.
Drawing information from never-before-seen pages of documents, emails, and text messages, the Netflix series about the succession of Murdoch’s business focuses heavily on the brewing tension between Rupert’s chosen heir, Lachlan, and his remaining three children.
The first trailer for the docuseries also showcases interviews with several personalities, who were clipped as they shared their accounts of the dynamics of the Murdoch family. One interviewee in the teaser describes the behind-the-scenes tussle for Murdoch’s business by stating, “It reads like an episode of Succession.” Notably, the four-season HBO hit drew inspiration from the dynamics shared between the Murdoch family.
Another observer states that the business magnate “wasn’t raising children, he was raising possible successors.” While a third interviewee compares the Netflix series to a tweaked version of The Hunger Games, another describes the battle for Rupert Murdoch’s empire as “a family squabble on steroids that has a huge effect on our politics and our lives.”
Moreover, the reporters who feature in the docuseries and provide insight into the legal battle between the Murdoch family include The New York Times’ Jim Rutenberg and Jonathan Mahler, along with former Fox News associates, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Directed by Liz Garbus, Dynasty: The Murdochs hits Netflix on March 13, 2026.
