NBC Could Renew Chicago Fire, Law & Order SVU, & 3 More Shows — Report

NBC appears ready to secure its flagship dramas for another season, with a new report suggesting that five of the network’s most established series, including the long-running Law & Order: SVU, might be renewed. After a wave of cancellations in 2025, the network is reportedly looking to lock in its strongest performers.

NBC is likely to renew Law & Order: SVU and four other shows

According to Deadline, Dick Wolf’s five NBC drama series are all expected to be picked up for the 2026-27 season. This includes the entire One Chicago franchise, aka Chicago PD, Chicago Med, and Chicago Fire, alongside Law & Order: SVU and the original Law & Order revival.

The renewals would be a return to stability for NBC, which cleared six scripted series from its slate last year to accommodate the NBA’s arrival in prime time. Now, with eight pilots in development, like five dramas and three comedies, the network seems to be once again investing in scripted content.

Moreover, Law and Order: SVU has never faced serious cancellation doubt, consistently delivering strong linear ratings for NBC and solid streaming numbers on Peacock. The series remains a cornerstone of the network’s Thursday night lineup and a reliable performer in an increasingly fragmented television landscape. Similarly, Chicago PD and Chicago Fire continue to draw loyal audiences. The procedurals benefit from built-in fan bases and cross-promotion within the One Chicago block, making them safe bets for renewal year after year.

Having said that, as in recent years, these renewals will likely come with budget cuts. Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television have implemented cost-saving measures since 2023, including reduced minimum guarantees for cast members. Longtime actors now appear in fewer episodes per season, a practice that has spread to other veteran broadcast series. Cast departures remain a reality as shows adjust budgets to secure annual renewals.

For now, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago PD, and Chicago Fire fans can breathe easier as the Wolf pack appears ready to hunt another season.
