Hockey Fans Say Stranger Things Star ‘Jinxed’ Canada in Match Against US

A Stranger Things actor was slammed online for supporting Canada against the United States during Sunday’s Winter Olympics hockey game. Although the 21-year-old was born in the United States, he holds dual citizenship with Canada. He was in the arena, donning the team’s jersey alongside his father.

Noah Schnapp criticized for supporting Canada in Olympics hockey match against US

On Sunday, February 22, the US hockey team made history by winning the gold medal with a 2–1 victory over Canada at the ongoing 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy. This was the country’s first gold medal since 1980. While the US team celebrated their win, the fans of both teams took to social media to troll Stranger Things alum Noah Schnapp.

For context, Schnapp, who was born in New York City, was seen at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, wearing Team Canada’s red jersey. He was rooting for the team alongside his father, Mitchell Schnapp. This appeared to have irked some viewers.

Fans of the US team have criticized the actor for supporting Canada despite being born in the United States. One user posted, “He is exactly what is wrong with the US.”

Another user gave it a political spin, writing, “I’m surprised he’s not supporting the Israeli team.”

A third user joked, “Still under control of the Mind Flayer, obviously. He likes it cold.”

“Knowing he watched them lose is soo good,” another commented.

On the other hand, some Team Canada fans argued that the team lost because of Noah. One user wrote, “Noah Schnapp jinxed Canada. #CANvsUSA”

Meanwhile, another user said, “honestly that’s bad luck for Canada.”

Despite the majority of the comments criticizing the actor, some users have expressed a neutral opinion. One user noted, “You don’t have to be Canadian to support their team.”

Another pointed out, “It’s actually pretty cool to see him showing up for his Canadian heritage despite the inevitable backlash from US fans.”

Both of Noah’s parent, Mitchell and Karine, are from Montréal, Québec, Canada. As a result, the actor has had exposure to both cultures from an early age and holds citizenship in both countries. In a 2017 interview, he revealed that his favorite hockey team is the Montreal Canadiens.
