Prince William Speaks Honestly About His Mental State at BAFTAs

While attending the BAFTA Awards in his role as president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Prince William admitted he wasn’t quite in the right headspace to sit through one of the evening’s most talked-about films. The appearance came just days after his uncle, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

Prince William admits he needs to be in a ‘calm state’ to watch ‘Hamnet’ at BAFTA Awards

Speaking with Elaine Bedell, chief executive of the Southbank Centre, and Allison Kirkby, chief executive of BT Group, Prince William was asked whether he had seen “Hamnet,” which has dominated awards chatter this season. According to GB News, the Prince of Wales said, “I need to be in quite a calm state and I’m not at the moment. I will save it.”

While William opted to postpone his viewing, Kate Middleton had already watched the film, and it clearly left an impression. During the same conversation, the Princess of Wales revealed she was “in floods of tears” after seeing it. She described the production as “very powerful” and “fantastic,” praising its emotional depth. The film has made BAFTA history this year, earning 11 nominations, the highest ever for a female-directed film at the awards.

Middleton also spoke about sharing cinema experiences at home. She said their children have started to show more interest in film, especially what happens behind the camera. “They love the idea of being behind the scenes and finding out how it all happens,” she explained. The mom of three added that film can open the door to meaningful conversations, saying, “It’s a really great way to have some of the hard conversations with them. We have still got a long list of films we haven’t seen. Hopefully this will help.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales attended the ceremony as part of William’s long-standing commitment to BAFTA. But the awards night took place during a tense time. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, William’s uncle, was arrested last week on his birthday and questioned by police for 11 hours. Authorities suspect him of misconduct in public office and claim he may have shared sensitive information while working as the U.K.’s trade envoy.
