Jason Bateman Addresses Controversy Around His Comment to Charli XCX

Jason Bateman has weighed in on the fallout of his conversation with singer Charli XCX, who appeared on his SmartLess podcast recently. His comments had apparently upset many people, who spoke out against the actor for making them. However, Bateman said he found the response “valuable” and “educational,” saying it shows how people react to “anything” he does or says.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Jason Bateman discussed the backlash he received after his candid exchange with Charlie XCX.

“We were having a great conversation about her life growing up as an only child,” the Ozark actor said. “It seemed like a very natural follow-up to that. That’s all it was.”

“I don’t really have much [else] to say about it, except that it is always interesting and valuable and educational to hear people’s thoughts, reactions, and feelings to anything I say or do,” the Zootopia star added.

For context, the “Break The Rules” singer recently appeared on SmartLess, a podcast hosted by Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett. During the podcast, their conversation turned to discussing how many kids the singer would like to have.

The 33-year-old said that she loves the “fantasy of having a child and naming it.” However, Charli XCX admitted that while she likes the idea, she also sees it as a sign that she shouldn’t have kids, since she finds naming the child the “coolest” part.

In response, the Arrested Development star said that she might change her mind when she meets the right partner. He recalled that his wife didn’t want any kids at the beginning of their relationship, but later changed her mind.

The “Boom Clap” singer replied that she’s already married to George Daniel, drummer for The 1975. The Emmy-winning actor then joked, “I need to read the newspaper one of these days.” The singer said it was okay that he didn’t know and that she “immediately” understood where he was going with the conversation. In the end, Bateman quipped that maybe she’ll want to have kids with her “next husband.”

This conversation had seemingly caught the internet’s attention. Many took to social media to speak out against the actor. One user labeled the exchange “gross,” while the other posted that it was “none of his f—– business.” On the other hand, some users have said it’s not something to get riled up about.
