Margot Robbie recalls Jacob Elordi breaking a chair while filming Wuthering Heights scene

While filming Wuthering Heights, Jacob Elordi actually broke a chair during a dramatic scene. His costar Margot Robbie shared the story in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times (via PEOPLE.) The movie features Robbie playing Catherine, while Elordi plays Heathcliff.

The director Emerald Fennell revealed in one early scene, Heathcliff breaks a chair to build a fire for Cathy. But Elordi did not just pretend he really snapped the chair with his bare hands. “He actually broke the chair,” Robbie said, adding that her shocked expression in the scene was real. “That is my genuine reaction.”

Fennell explained that she wanted the movie to feel intense. She said everyone on set felt the energy of that moment. “I looked around and all of these professionals, women and men, were agape. Everyone felt the same way as Cathy. That’s what I was looking for every day.”

Robbie shared that she enjoys working with Fennell because the director encourages bold performances. “My instinct is to go really hard and then have someone tell me to pull it back. She rarely tells me to pull it back.”

“She wants the maximalist version and I relish that. She would say, ‘Now you’re in a sensible period film.’ And then she’d say ‘Now do it like you’re Ursula the sea witch,'” Robbie shared.

Wuthering Heights hits theaters on February 13. The movie also stars Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Ewan Mitchell and Martin Clunes.
