What Prince William’s Statement on Ex-Prince Andrew Means — Expert

A rare statement from Buckingham Palace has sent a clear signal that the royal family’s approach to Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is shifting, and royal watchers say Prince William is very much driving that change. On February 8, the Palace addressed an ongoing police assessment related to Andrew’s past conduct while serving as a UK trade envoy.

The statement stressed that any specific allegations are for Andrew to address personally, while adding that the royal household would fully cooperate if contacted by authorities.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams described the Palace’s language as unusually direct. He said, “This sounds like an invitation to help the police who are investigating,” adding that such clarity is rare for the monarchy, particularly while senior royals are carrying out overseas duties. At the time the statement was released, Prince William was on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, making the timing even more striking.

According to insiders, the Prince and Princess of Wales’ office issued its position. “The Waleses’ statement came first, which is significant too. William is obviously asserting himself,” Fitzwilliams said. “It is an urgent matter, as the monarchy’s reputation is at stake.”

Prince William and Kate Middleton addressed the latest release of files related to Jeffrey Epstein, saying through a spokesperson that they are deeply concerned by the ongoing revelations and remain focused on the victims. “I can confirm the Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations,” the person said. “Their thoughts remain focused on the victims.”

The statement added that, “their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any forms of abuse.” This is the first time the Prince and Princess have spoken directly about the scandal.
