Margot Robbie is opening up about an uncomfortable moment from the early days of her career, recalling a gift from a fellow actor that left a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.
The Oscar-nominated actress shared the story during a recent on-camera interview for her upcoming film Wuthering Heights, offering a candid look at the unsolicited commentary she faced as a young performer navigating Hollywood.
A male actor once gave Margot Robbie the book ‘Why French Women Don’t Get Fat’
Robbie opened up about the awkward moment during a video chat with Charli xcx for Complex, where they were asked about the worst gifts they’ve ever received. She didn’t hesitate, calling out an incident from “very very early” in her acting days involving a male co-star she chose not to name.
The 35-year-old explained that the actor gifted her a copy of Why French Women Don’t Get Fat, a 2007 lifestyle book by Mireille Guiliano. She summed it up bluntly, saying it was basically a book “telling her to eat less.” Robbie didn’t sugarcoat her first reaction. She said she was instantly offended, basically thinking, “Whoa, f— you, dude.”
The incident happened very early in her career, and she admitted she has no clue where that actor ended up. Charli xcx jumped in with humor during the interview, joking to the camera that the guy had doomed his own career. “Your career’s over, babe,” she joked.
Robbie went on to explain why the gift hit such a nerve. To her, it felt like a comment about her body. She said the message came across as someone telling her she needed to lose weight, which left her stunned. Looking back, all she could really say was a shocked, disappointed “wow.”
The conversation also made room for Charli xcx to share her own strange experience, revealing that a fan once gave her a small jar containing the ashes of the fan’s mother, worn as a necklace. “I just didn’t quite know what to do with it,” the singer said.
Robbie currently stars in Wuthering Heights, which arrives in theaters Friday, Feb. 13.
