Dove Cameron is reflecting on a period of deep personal growth that reshaped her approach to love. She suggested that some of her earlier romances felt like “trauma bonds” and admitted she often ignored warning signs at the time. While she didn’t name specific partners, Cameron acknowledged that looking back brings a mix of self-blame and compassion.
After one breakup in particular, Cameron said she withdrew almost completely from dating and social life. She described entering what she called a “two-year dating romantic sabbatical.” “I just disappeared off the face of the planet,” Cameron said. “There was a while where I was like, ‘Whoa, I’m broken. I don’t want anyone.’” During that period, she claimed she focused on learning how to be alone and rebuilding her sense of self, rather than seeking another relationship to fill the gap.
Cameron also shared that one especially “scary moment” with an ex ultimately pushed her to walk away. She alleged that the situation escalated to the point where she felt compelled to “document” what was happening and reach out to loved ones for support. It was only then, she said, that she began to recognize the difference between love and harm.
That period of healing, she believes, is what allowed her to eventually form a stable relationship with fiancé Damiano David. Cameron recalled meeting David briefly at the MTV VMAs in 2022, though she says neither of them was emotionally ready at the time. When they crossed paths again a year later, she claimed both were in a “better place,” and the connection developed naturally. Cameron and David eventually confirmed their relationship in 2024 and announced their engagement last month.
