Britani Bateman, best known as a cast member of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City, turned up at the American Idol audition, leaving viewers and judges confounded. She came with her niece, Carmen Lorell Martin, a 20-year-old from El Dorado Hills, California.

Her niece seemed to idolize her and claimed, “Britani has always been a big mentor to me to get out there.”

Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood seemed to be very curious at the start seeeing two people on the stage. Tapping a wine glass, Britani said, “I have an announcement,” and introduced her “beautiful niece.”

After introducing herself, Bryan noted that Britani had to give away her spotlight now. Martin went on to play and sing a piano version of Thought It Was Love by Ty Myers. Britani wiped away tears after the performance.

Martin further revealed that Britani had worked on Broadway and released music before joining Housewives in 2024.

The judges also seemed impressed by the performance. “You have a really pretty voice,” Underwood said, “Your range is really great. You’re hitting some high notes in there, but it would be great if you could put some oomph in there.” Bryan, meanwhile, asked her to “cut loose a little bit.”

Richie concluded, “I think that the only way she’s going to understand this thing called roughing up is to put her in a brawl. The only way to put you in a brawl is to say yes, so you go to the next level and meet the rest of this crazy class, and you understand what this means.”

Bryan announced that Martin had earned her Golden Ticket.
