Industry Creator Explains How ‘Finance Bros’ Misinterpret the Show

One of the creators of the HBO series Industry, Mickey Down, recently opened up about how some viewers have misinterpreted the real meaning of the show, with some going as far as to select the finance sector as their profession.

Mickey Down reveals several people got into finance due to Industry

While speaking with The Wall Street Journal along with fellow series creator Konrad Kay, Down admitted that some fans of the show ended up getting overly captivated by the riches showcased in their series. He further elaborated that, in doing so, some viewers failed to see the cost that the characters of such shows have to pay to sustain their lavish lifestyle.

“Anything of this ilk, anything set in this world has to feel very seductive in this first act because you have to, basically, convince the audience to think that these people are having a great time, and you have to lean in,” Down said, before adding, “And then the third act is usually when it all goes to hell and you reveal the person’s pursuit of this thing is not gonna be edifying — it’s actually gonna destroy them. And a lot of finance bros just watch the first act and just think, ‘OK, that looks fun, I can do drugs and have loads of sex, and that looks like rock ‘n’ roll.’ And they don’t really watch the third act, where it all implodes.”

Down spoke further about his view on the impact that Industry has had on younger viewers, noting, “It’s weird because I still get LinkedIn messages, and there’s usually a slew of messages from people being like ‘Bro, I love your show. Got me into finance.'”

Created by former investment bankers Down and Kay, Industry made its debut in 2020. It focuses on the misadventures of young finance graduates who try to make their way in the cutthroat world of investment banking. Season 4 of the series is currently airing its episodes.
