Matt Damon reveals what is worse than jail time in an interview with The Joe Rogan Experience. Notably, Damon and co-star Ben Affleck have been on an intense press tour to promote their action-thriller film The Rip. The film was released on Netflix on January 16.
Matt Damon reveals the one thing worse than jail
Matt Damon names the one thing more haunting than jail on The Joe Rogan Podcast. Damon and Rogan reflected on Hollywood’s cancel culture. The Martian star confessed that some cancelled stars would have preferred to go to jail rather than deal with the intense media and public scrutiny that comes with “cancel culture.”
Podcast host Rogan also shared his thoughts on being “cancelled.” He described it as “this idea that one thing you said or one thing you did”. Adding further, he said, “And now we’re going to exaggerate that to the fullest extent and cast you out of civilization for life.” Agreeing with Rogan, the Oppenheimer star further dished that he “bet some of these people would have preferred serving a prison sentence than deal with the dreadful backlash.”
He remarked, “Because I bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, ‘I paid my debt. Like, we’re done. Like, can we be done?’ The thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it’s the first thing that… you know, it just will follow you to the grave.”
Interestingly, the 55-year-old Oscar nominee faced cancel culture and the internet’s unforgiving ways in 2021. Back then, Damon had revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times that he had stopped using the “F” cuss word only “months ago”. That is because his daughter wrote him a “treatise” on “how that word is dangerous.”
The backlash prompted The Rip star to clarify his stance to Variety. Damon confessed that he never used the word in his “personal life” and does not “use slurs of any kind.” He reiterated that he understands why the interview “led many to assume the worst.”
