Miley Cyrus’ Mom Tish Says She Used Weed To ‘Self-Medicate’ After Divorce

Tish Cyrus is opening up about one of the most difficult chapters of her life. In a candid podcast appearance, Miley Cyrus’ mom reflected on how she coped with profound personal loss, including the end of her decades-long marriage. While looking back, Tish acknowledged that her methods for getting through that period weren’t always healthy, but she says they helped her survive at the time.

During an appearance on The Squeeze podcast, Cyrus, shared that she believes she leaned heavily on weed as a form of “self-medication” following what she described as a “tragic” period in her life. According to the noted manager and producer, the combination of her divorce from Billy Ray Cyrus and the loss of her mother, Loretta Finley, left her emotionally overwhelmed.

Cyrus told host Tay Lautner that she had long dealt with anxiety and viewed weed as a form of “plant medicine” at the time. Looking back, she said she didn’t initially recognize that her use of marijuana was tied to grief and emotional distress. “I do think it kinda numbed all that pain,” she shared, adding that she didn’t fully process what she was going through.

Cyrus also recalled how stopping the habit was a wake-up call. She alleged that when she quit, her anxiety intensified to the point where she struggled to function day to day. “I did not know what was happening,” she said.

Much of that pain, she explained, stemmed from losing her mother, who was deeply embedded in the family’s everyday life. Finley, who passed away in 2020, was especially close to Cyrus’ children, including daughter Miley Cyrus. Cyrus recalled that her mom lived near the family for years and was a constant presence, even spending time on set during Miley’s Hannah Montana days.

Not long after, Cyrus said her marriage began to unravel. She filed for divorce in April 2022 after nearly three decades with Billy Ray, citing “irreconcilable differences.” She has previously claimed they had been living separately for some time.

Therapy ultimately became a turning point for Cyrus. She credited professional help with allowing her to confront unresolved trauma and better understand her anxiety. Today, she says she’s in a healthier place and has found stability in her marriage to Dominic Purcell, whom she got married to in 2023.

While Cyrus emphasized that her struggles didn’t disappear overnight, she noted she’s finally “learning how to deal with it,” and no longer feels like she’s simply “trying to survive.”
