The Rip, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon‘s latest action flick, will soon be available to stream, but the project has already made headlines, owing to the duo’s unique deal with Netflix. The agreement seeks to benefit the behind-the-scenes crew of the film, in case it ends up racking up more viewership numbers than expected. In a recent interview, Affleck opened up about the one-of-a-kind pact with Netflix, stating that it aims to ensure a “decent middle-class wage” for everyone involved.
Ben Affleck and Matt Damon strike unique Netflix pay deal for film crew
While speaking with Variety at The Rip’s worldwide premiere in New York, Ben Affleck explained his and Matt Damon’s deal with Netflix by saying that one should be able to reap the benefits of their labor if their project ends up becoming successful.
“I would not characterise it as, like, an effort to do something commendable or to use a platform. Really, this business is changing, and in order to maintain the integrity of it and to provide the decent middle-class wage that has been provided for decades in this country, you have compensation that works for people. And as you’ve seen, there has been a lot of tumult, change, and transition, so you have to adapt,” the two-time Academy Award winner remarked.
Notably, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s deal with Netflix entitles all 1,200 members of The Rip’s crew to a one-off back-end bonus if the movie is able to meet Netflix’s viewership targets.
“There’s no guarantee that everyone is going to get rich or be successful, but if you work on a project and it is successful, you ought to benefit from that,” Affleck added.
The 53-year-old Hollywood veteran also applauded the streaming platform for agreeing to the said deal, stating, “Netflix has been extremely supportive of our effort to do this and wants to see if it works.”
The Rip, featuring Affleck and Damon in the lead, along with Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle, Kyle Chandler, and more, premieres on Netflix on January 16, 2026.
