Donald Trump once again aimed at Joe Biden, this time with a fresh onstage impression that leaned heavily into mockery. While speaking at a public event in Michigan, Trump revisited familiar jabs about Biden’s speaking style.
Donald Trump mocks Joe Biden in new speech
Trump performed the new impression while addressing the Detroit Economic Club in Michigan on January 13. Midway through his speech, he mentioned his preference for speaking without strict reliance on prepared remarks. “You know, when you go up here, you take a big chance,” Trump said. “Especially me because I go off teleprompter about 80% of the time. But isn’t it nice to have a president that can go off teleprompter, don’t you think?”
The comment drew cheers and laughter from the crowd, leading Donald Trump to talk about his predecessor, Joe Biden. “Remember the speeches Joe [Biden] would make? First of all, they’d last a matter of seconds, you know,” he said, before launching into a brief impersonation.
Trump then mimicked Biden in a raspy tone, saying, “Thank you very much,” and followed it by acting out coughing noises. “You ever noticed Joe would always cough before a speech?” the president asked. “State of the Union (coughing enactment) he goes ‘ladies and gentlemen.’ ”
According to him, Biden’s speeches were often “very short,” though he singled out one exception. “Although the one time they had him spruced up pretty good,” Trump said. “Remember, he was high as a kite? He was floating. He was up there way up. He didn’t. That was a bad speech. But uh, hey, he got through it, you know. He got through it. If you call it getting through it.”
The Detroit appearance followed Trump’s recent interview with The New York Times, where he reportedly brought up Biden’s name “repeatedly.” During that interview, Trump said, “I think Joe Biden is the worst thing that ever happened to old people.” Trump’s criticism of Biden has also shown up in more symbolic ways, like in the Presidential Walk of Fame.
