Failed Video Game Movie With Dwayne Johnson To Get a Reboot

Universal may be revisiting one of Dwayne Johnson’s most infamous video game roles, according to a new report. The studio is reportedly developing a reboot of Doom, the sci-fi action franchise based on the popular video game series.

Another Doom movie rumored to be in works at Universal

A new Doom movie is reportedly in development at Universal Pictures. On January 9, 2026, the entertainment scooper @MyTimeToShineHello posted on X (formerly Twitter), “A new Doom movie based on the popular video game franchise is in development at Universal.” Universal Pictures has not issued an official statement confirming the project.

The studio released two previous Doom-based films. The first, Doom (2005), directed by Andrzej Bartkowiak, featured Karl Urban, Rosamund Pike, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It loosely adapted id Software’s video game franchise and carried a reported production budget between $60 million and $70 million. The film earned around $58 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). In 2019, Universal released a second film, Doom: Annihilation, directly to video.

In 2020, We Got This Covered reported that Universal began developing a reboot of the Doom franchise and planned a tie-in television series. The studio reportedly aimed to align the new film more closely with the original 1993 game. It also intended the television series to expand the scope of the franchise, as per the report.

The 2005 Doom film received an 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 34/100 score on Metacritic. Dwayne Johnson later described the film as a failure in a 2009 MTV interview, calling it a cautionary tale of “what not to do” (via Engadget). In 2021, Rosamund Pike expressed regret over her lack of familiarity with the source material, saying, “I feel embarrassed, really” (via Collider).

Notably, Universal has not announced any casting, a director, or a release window for the reported new project.
