Jimmy Kimmel mocked Donald Trump once again, closing out a recent episode of his show with a video montage that appeared to show the president sleeping during official meetings.
Jimmy Kimmel mocks Donald Trump with video montage
During his January 7 episode monologue, Jimmy Kimmel introduced Trump as “Teddy Dozevelt,” joking that the president has “enough trouble staying awake.” The late-night host then set up a 40-second compilation of clips showing Trump with his eyes closed during various public appearances.
“Teddy Dozevelt told The Wall Street Journal that… You know those many videos of him nodding off during meetings? He says he’s not sleeping, he’s blinking,” Kimmel told the audience. “That’s right, he has the rare ability to hold a blink for minutes at a time.” He added, “To showcase that ability, we put together this video montage of some of the many times he most definitely wasn’t falling asleep on live TV.”
The montage included footage of Trump with his eyes shut during a meeting with Mohammed bin Salman, as well as moments where he sat beside Marco Rubio and appeared visibly disengaged during meetings and press conferences.
The segment followed Trump’s recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, in which he denied sleeping during meetings. “Sometimes they’ll take a picture of me blinking,” Trump said. “And they’ll catch me with the blink,” adding that closing his eyes is “very relaxing to me” during meetings. Trump also told the outlet he avoids regular exercise. “I just don’t like it. It’s boring,” he said. “To walk on a treadmill or run on a treadmill for hours and hours like some people do, that’s not for me.”
Trump’s aides have previously pushed back on claims that he dozes off. White House chief of staff Susie Wiles told Vanity Fair in December that “he’s got his eyes closed and his head leaned back … and, you know, he’s fine.” Press secretary Karoline Leavitt also defended Trump’s attentiveness after similar footage surfaced from a December 2 cabinet meeting.
